Letters to Carrie while serving with the 8th from Camp at Cairo, Ill. and Tennessee tell of his shock at the death of Stephen A. Douglas, the regiment, camp life and the battles at Belmont and Fort Donelson. Letter from Jackson, Tenn. describes being quartered among a town of Southern sympathizers. Several letters from Peter Weyhrich, 44th Illinois Infantry, to Dietrich while in Pekin from Murfreesboro and Vicksburg after its capture. Letter, 1863, from a friend in the 8th tells of the review of the 8th by Gen R.J. Oglesby. Muster rolls for the 139th. A number of letters from Carrie, including one from Texas where she taught school for a short time, describes her job and Texas. Letter, Feb. 1865, Dietrich to his wife from Washington tells of an open reception given by Mrs. Lincoln, where he met the president who although he was "smiling looked thin and careworn."
